It is disheartening being a recruiter when have to hang-up a call saying "sorry I can’t consider your profile as you have a curricular gap"
There can be three dimensional perspectives to these circumstances,
one from the candidates perspective , one can be from a recruiter’s perspective and the last one who is ruling both the perspective is the client and their desideratum for the position to be filled.
People of course have many things to do besides their jobs(babies, travel, education, health, Work related project, work from home) It is not only "The gap" that matters in the candidature and it is the etiology of gap that creates the ambiguity, if it is not explainable.
However being a recruiter, we always have to be ascertain of consummating clients and candidates prospects which always doesn’t necessarily complement each other. Often we have to face contradicting situations, emerging from our comfort zone. If our clients want us to fixate on the "Employment Gap", if any, then we are bound to verify the same. Although we have to listen to our candidates while assessing, whether they have a valid point to quote. Let me illustrate an example:
Recently, I was validating one candidate for some position, he had 3 years of unexplained gap in the CV, to which my question was conspicuous but his answer was shockingly unexpected, on asking him about the gap he just told me that for some reason he was in USA, further on asking the reason to designate, he addressed it to be very personal to be disclosed” and I fell short of questions and suddenly my full throbbing mind hit by cloud of thoughts that why would he give such a vague reason?, he might have framed it well !!!, by doing so is he genuine with the reason? OR he is trying to hide something which can mark a negative impact on his CV. Even though having a very substantial amount of technical cognizance, just because of his incomplete answer I disconnected the conversation.
From the organizational perspective, they will always seek an explication of hiding something and the questions arises like "Were you fired from the precedent organization?" , "Did you abscond" Or "were you unemployed".
To sum up, Employment gaps & their reasons aren’t concerns to any organization, but they just want to understand your profile you have mentioned in your CV. Companies always regale qualitative resource unless they have valid reasons for their employment gaps.
If you have an employment gap which you think needs to be highlighted, just specify the reason in your resume.
